Mount Meru Climbing Routes
The Mount Meru Route, officially known as the Momella Route, is the only established route that leads trekkers to the summit of Mount Meru (4,566 m) in Arusha National Park, Tanzania. This route offers a moderate yet challenging trek through diverse ecosystems, rich wildlife zones, and stunning volcanic landscapes, culminating in a dramatic summit ridge with breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the expansive Meru Crater.
The trek typically takes 3 to 4 days, making it an ideal option for acclimatization before climbing Kilimanjaro or as a rewarding standalone adventure. The route starts at Momella Gate (1,500 m) and ascends steadily through several ecological zones from open grasslands and montane rainforests to heath, moorland, and finally the alpine desert zone near the summit.
Unlike many other mountain climbs, the Mount Meru Route is unique in that it passes through a national park, meaning trekkers are often joined by an armed ranger to protect them from wildlife such as buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, monkeys, and even elephants, which may be encountered on the trail.
The main overnight stops are Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m) and Saddle Hut (3,570 m). An optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820 m) is recommended to prepare for summit day. The final ascent begins around midnight, taking hikers up steep switchbacks along the crater rim to reach the summit, Socialist Peak, just in time for sunrise. The summit offers panoramic views of the Meru Crater, the Ash Cone, and Mount Kilimanjaro rising above the clouds.
One of the unique features of this route is the use of two different trails for the ascent and descent—known as the lower and upper routes which loop through different scenic sections of the park. The lower route (used for ascent) is longer and passes waterfalls, open plains, and fig trees with more opportunities to see wildlife, while the upper route (used for descent) offers a faster way down through dense forest.
Overall, the Mount Meru Route provides a serene, scenic, and wildlife rich alternative to the more crowded Kilimanjaro trails, offering a rich blend of trekking, nature, and adventure that appeals to both seasoned hikers and first-timers alike.
