Best Time to Visit Tanzania
Plan Your Perfect Safari or Kilimanjaro Adventure
Tanzania is a year-round destination with something special to offer in every season. Whether you’re here for a wildlife safari, a Mount Kilimanjaro climb, or a beach holiday in Zanzibar, the best time to visit depends on what you want to experience.
Peak Season (June to October) – The Classic Safari Window
This is the dry season, and it’s the most popular time to visit Tanzania. Clear skies, minimal rainfall, and fantastic wildlife viewing make this the perfect period for first-time visitors and photographers.
Highlights:
- Best wildlife viewing in Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara
- Animals gather around rivers and waterholes – easy to spot
- Ideal time for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro
- Great weather for beach getaways in Zanzibar
Good for: Safaris, Kilimanjaro climbs, honeymoons, family holidays
🌿 Green Season (November to March) – Lush Landscapes and Baby Animals
Also called the short rains and early wet season, this time of year features short showers and vibrant greenery. Wildlife is still plentiful, and this is the calving season for wildebeests in the Serengeti.
Highlights:
- Fewer tourists, lower prices on tours and lodges
- Excellent birdwatching (many migratory birds present)
- Wildebeest calving in southern Serengeti (Jan–March)
- Great weather for cultural tours and coastal travel
Good for: Birdwatching, scenic photography, travelers on a budget
Long Rainy Season (April to May) – Low Season
This is the wettest time of the year, and some remote roads and lodges may be closed. However, if you don’t mind occasional rain and want to avoid crowds, it can be a peaceful time to travel.
Highlights:
- Very few tourists – total serenity in the parks
- Drastic discounts on accommodation and safaris
- Kilimanjaro is still climbable via drier routes like Rongai
Good for: Budget travelers, photographers, experienced hikers
